Introducing Catherine Evans, debut rural romance author
but no newcomer to the rural life!
Catherine’s new book The Healing Season is releasing 15th March (read the back cover blurb below).
Catherine Evans is a city-born throwback to country genes. After completing an Environmental Biology degree, she desperately needed to move to the country. A job in agriculture was the perfect escape. After spending eighteen years in agricultural research and gaining a Masters degree in Agriculture, Cath has a passion for rural life.
Now living on the south coast of NSW, a large part of her heart belongs across the mountain ranges in the red dust.
Catherine Evans. Rural Romances – Fiction, Farming, Families
I’m thrilled to be a part of Australian Rural Romance. I starting writing rural romances in 2006, so it’s taken a while to get one into readers’ hands. But I’m here now and I’ve had a lot of fun along the way.
I was born in Sydney but my dream from when I was a child was to move to the country and own a horse. After Uni, I did that. I moved to Wagga Wagga, armed with an Environmental Biology degree, to work in the Department of Agriculture. I was in the lab doing soils research and it was awesome.
I got studying agriculture at Charles Sturt Uni, a lady from work ‘adopted’ me and taught me to ride on her spare pony, I joined Pony Club, and every second day I embarrassed myself totally … but I loved every second of it. For the first few months, I barely understood what was being discussed in the morning tea room, but I was comfortable in the landscape, the people were friendly and helpful, and I started to feel at home.
After 8 years in Wagga, I got a job in Condobolin and moved out there for the next 9 years.
It was even more awesome, even if I thought I was in a time warp – my office reminded me of my Dad’s when I was a kid! I worked on a soils project for 3 years, then I took a job working for a farmer-run group called Central West Farming Systems. They were doing research trials on farms, looking at questions local farmers wanted answered and working collaboratively with other groups, scientists, and locals. I loved it … but I was still learning, every single day, often much to people’s amusement. One day I’ll write a book about the stupid things I managed to do while I struggled to learn what came so naturally to everyone around me.
I married a Condo-born man and after a few years, we packed up and moved to the coast. I know, crazy, right? But we found a small town, which feels like a country town except at holiday time, and we’ve settled in.
I miss the red plains but there’s something soothing about the vast blue sea that rolls continuously at you while your feet sink into the shifting sand.
Although I’m the only person in my family to move from Sydney, Mum always said I was a ‘throwback’ to her country genes. Her grandfather’s family were from a property at Howlong and had been there for a couple of generations. Then when we looked into Dad’s family, his father’s family were from Come-By-Chance. So I have country genes from both sides, and I couldn’t help escaping from Sydney as soon as I could!
As well as writing, I love taking photos. I was slow to take up digital photography, but I love that I can now take a thousand shots and see if any work out. I’d have been broke if I tried that method with film!
My first book, The Healing Season, is out in March. I snuck in a bit of photography and rather than taking photos, I described sights I’ve seen and wished I’d been able to capture. Creating word pictures for the photos I’ve never been good enough to take. Hope you can imagine those scenes.
I won’t bore you with more but feel free to check out my website CatherineEvansAuthor.com or come and chat to me on on Facebook Catherine Evans Author or Twitter @CathEvansAuthor. I’m not that great at social media but I’m trying to improve! If you see me fumbling around, feel free to tell me what I should be doing – and if I’m there too much, boot me off before I get addicted to it!

Alicia used to know exactly what her life would look like: marry her best friend, manage her home town agricultural store, and live in her grandparent’s old house. But life never goes to plan, and Alicia is left with nothing more than the store to keep her going. Until a new employee walks through her door and offers a new friendship and potentially something more.
Lachlan has spent his life running, and Dulili is just far enough away for a new start.
But small towns have few secrets, and running from the past is a surefire way to guarantee no hope for a future.
The Healing Season is releasing 15 March 2016 in eBook format and is up for pre-order now.
