Release day & giveaway! Tallowood Bound by Karly Lane

Wednesday Wanderings with ARR authors.

Today, Karly Lane is chatting about new release Tallowood Bound
and the inspiration for the story that’s been in her mind for…
how many years, Karly?

(Giveaway now ended.)

Released today!

When Erin Macalister heads to her home town to help take care of her beloved grandmother she’s relieved to be leaving behind both the city and the remnants of a broken marriage. Arriving in the small rural town she finds nothing much has changed there – including Jamie McBride, who lives on the neighbouring farm to her and is as ridiculously good looking as he was when they were seventeen and madly in love.

Desperate to bring back her grandmother’s smile, Erin goes through old photo albums with her. Though frail and confused her grandmother tells vivid stories about the past, including memories of a soldier she once loved. Erin’s curiosity about the man deepens when she finds an engagement ring he once gave her grandmother.

Meanwhile, Jamie McBride seems intent on rekindling their relationship, even though Erin’s not at all sure she wants to risk heartache again…

From the bestselling author of Poppy’s Dilemma and Gemma’s Bluff, this poignant, heartfelt story of old loves and new possibilities is inspirational and entertaining.

Over to Karly…

Author Karly Lane

Tallowood Bound was a story brewing in my head for close to eighteen years. I wasn’t actually aware of it brewing, but it was always just kind of there. We moved to Townsville back in the mid 90’s right about the time the city was launching into celebrating the 50 year anniversary of WW2 in North Queensland. I remember seeing all the marker posts go up around the district marking various important sites during the war years from 1942 when Townsville became a major staging area for America and their allies after the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941.

Tiny timber sign posts dotted not only empty paddocks on the outskirts of town, but also in town marking things like US Army and Air force camps, houses that were used by the US military as hospitals and accommodation, as well as outside many of the schools and government buildings which had been taken over by the US military. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a marker reminding us of the massive upheaval of an unassuming town with a population of 30,000, that jumped to 100,000 practically overnight.

This era of history has always fascinated me. Imagine what it would be like for these laid back North Queendslander’s to wake up and find that while they’d been sleeping, ships had been unloading jeeps, supply trucks, personnel and machinery onto the beaches and were now setting up camp!

The Yanks were considered to be pretty wealthy compared to the average Aussie digger, (many of whom were serving overseas and in New Guinea, leaving their womenfolk unattended) and quite a novelty, often spending their money on luxuries like stockings and chocolates; items unobtainable for most people on rations. They had manners and charm and let’s not forget, accents.

Meanwhile, the town was struggling under the added burden of these thousands of extra mouths to feed and resentment and unrest was growing. The military claimed first dibs on food, fuel and ice, leaving locals to pay exorbitant prices for basics like milk and fresh produce.

This is what Evelyn, Erin’s grandmother in Tallowood Bound, is dealing with as a young woman growing up in war time Townsville during 1943 when she meets and falls in love with an American pilot.

Karly’s inspirational artwork for what might have been painted on that American pilot’s plane.

It’s a part of her grans life, Erin had never heard about until she uncovered the box of treasures, containing a stack of letters and photos from an era long gone. It’s just the distraction Erin needs as she tries to forget about her recent marriage breakdown.

Although the WW2 era in the story is only a backdrop, I found the research fascinating, and fell a little bit in love with Jimmy, the handsome US pilot, myself!

I hope you come to love Erin and her gran as much as I have and enjoy their story.

  16. My parents went up to Townsville for the 50th anniversary. My father was shipped from there to New Guinea during WWII. He was 18.

My father used to say that the Americans were ‘soft’, but that it was their help that saved Australia from invasion.

    A must read for me.

    • This book is all about that exact era in the war 🙂 it was fascinating! and I wish I’d been more interested back when the anniversary was on! The stories and research I could have gotten!!! Priceless. But I guess at that time in my life I was busy with babies and the usual stuff, and I wasn’t really thinking I was ever going to write books ‘for real’ back then! 😀
