Author Pamela Cook

Book launches are a tricky thing for an author. While you want to celebrate the birth of our ‘book baby’ with family, friends and possibly readers there’s also the pressure of being in the spotlight, an uncomfortable feeling for those of us who love the solitude that comes with spending your days writing.

Previous books by Pamela

For my first novel Blackwattle Lake, I splashed out on a huge affair, so excited was I to be joining the published author ranks. My second novel, Essie’s Way, came out only a year later and I thought it would be overdoing it to hold another event in such a short space of time. And I’m sorry about that now. I feel like I didn’t give ‘Essie’ the acknowledgment she deserved and, in some sense, I let the book down.

Pamela’s new release

The only thing harder than letting go is moving on.

So for my third novel, Close To Home, I decided to have an official launch – and I am so glad I did!

My fabulous publisher Hachette hosted the launch at their Sydney office and there was a great energy in the room. Family and friends from a whole range of different areas in my life came along to join in the celebration. It was wonderful to be able to introduce the story and characters to those closest to me and to be able to publicly thank everyone who has supported me along the way.

Although I was definitely nervous – and a little teary - during the speaking part I found it hard to wipe the smile off my face for most of the night.

Sadly my closest friend Kathie, to whom the book is dedicated, was unable to be there as she is seriously ill, but I was so glad her sister, daughter and mother could be there and she loved the photos I shared with her after the event.

So if any authors out there are pondering whether or not a launch is worth it I would definitely say yes. Having a book out there is, after all, something to celebrate!

  4. Congratulations on your new book, Pamela. Thank you for sharing your insight and experience in holding a book launch. As an avid reader, I always find it fascinating to hear the author “speak” on their books and lives. Another book has just been added to my tbr list!

  5. Congratulations Pamela on your new book. I have always wanted to write, but have never had the courage, as I don’t think it would be interesting enough. After hearing about your first book launch, I think I may give it a go. So, thank you.

    • Julie-Anne if you have the desire to write definitely go for it. Don’t put pressure on yourself to write for publication just write because it’s something you want to do and see where it takes you.

  6. You are what I dream to be - a published author of Australian Romance, loving your work and thoroughly enjoy reading your novels so far. Your insight is inspiring - thankyou for sharing.

  7. I wish I could have attended your book launch party. It would have been fun. CLOSE TO HOME sounds wonderful.
